Sierra Blanca Peak and Ski Apache terrain
30 to 40 min

Ski Apache

Ski Apache sits on Sierra Blanca Peak, operated by the Mescalero Apache Tribe. Winter brings more than 750 acres of terrain, New Mexico’s only gondola, and high-mountain snow days. Summer swaps skis for gondola rides, hiking, and the Apache Wind Rider ZipTour. Pack layers and check the road report. NM-532 is a real mountain climb.

Grindstone Lake and forest trail shoreline
5 to 10 min

Grindstone Lake

When you want outdoors without a mountain-pass commitment, Grindstone is the local answer. A high-country reservoir sits minutes from Midtown with roughly 14 to 18 miles of multi-use trails through ponderosa and meadow openings. Shore paths work for kids. Longer loops work for hikers and mountain bikers.

Ruidoso Downs

For more than half a century this track has put Ruidoso on the racing map. Live thoroughbred and quarter-horse meets typically run Friday through Sunday from late May into early September. Billy the Kid Casino keeps the lights on year-round. Even if you never place a bet, a race-day afternoon is pure regional theater.

Historic adobe buildings along Lincoln main street
35 to 45 min

Lincoln Historic Site

Lincoln is not a reconstructed movie set. New Mexico Historic Sites manages most of the 1870s and 1880s buildings, including the Old Lincoln County Courthouse where Billy the Kid was jailed and later escaped. Walk a single main street and read the conflict that made this valley famous. Pair with Capitan for Smokey Bear Historical Park on the same loop.

Mountain Gods

A short drive toward Mescalero brings resort dining, championship golf, and casino nights under the peaks. It is the easy dressed-up dinner option when trail dust needs a break. Book tee times and tables ahead on peak weekends.

Midtown Ruidoso

Sudderth Drive is the walkable hub for shops, restaurants, tasting rooms, and outdoor events at Wingfield Park. Perfect after a Grindstone loop or a quiet morning at the resort. Evenings fill up on summer weekends, so plan parking early.
